NEWARK, Del. - - With the game tied, 4-4, halfway through the first half, Georgian Court scored the final seven goals to go into the break lead to a 19-11 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (7-6, 6-0 CACC) scored three of the first four goals in the game before the Wildcats (4-9 2-4 CACC) battled back to tie the game, 3-3, with goals from Marisa Parker and Lashay Ross. The teams then traded goals with Gabby Spalt retying the game, 4-4, with 13:05 showing on the clock.
Georgian Court took the lead for good with 8:13 to play in the half and then went on to score six more goals before the break. The Wildcats had two shots during the streak, hitting the post once and having a good opportunity with less than a minute left. Ross had a chance to get the Wildcats back on the board in the final minute, but the ball was knocked out of her stick on her drive to the goal and the Lions scooped up the ball and took it the other, scoring with nine seconds left to go into break 11-4.
The Lions also scored the first two goals of the second half before the Wildcats scored three straight with goals from Shawna Chopko, La'Dae Boykin, and Megan Card to cut the deficit to 13-7 with 24:54 showing on the clock. But the Lions answered with back-to-back goals to retain momentum and the Wildcats couldn't get any closed than seven goals the rest of the way.
Spalt led the Wildcats with three goals and two assists while Boykin also secured a hat trick while adding one assist. Ross scored twice while Marisa Parker, Card and Chopko each scored one goal. Card led the Wildcats with seven draw controls while Parker, Spalt, Zameria Jones, and goalkeeper Maddie Hurm led the team with three ground balls each. Parker, Mikailla Spencer, and Ross led the team with two caused turnovers each.
The Lions narrowly led the Wildcats in shots, 32-28, while the draw controls were knotted at 16-16. Hurm recorded seven saves for the Wildcats while Amber Neumann made eight saves for the Lions.
The Wildcats wore Lax 4 Life warmup tshirts prior to the game, and played Saturday's game for suicide prevention awareness.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia University for their final road game of the regular season. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Philadelphia.
