NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team wasn't able to put a stop to the Bloomsburg offense at the end of the first half, as the Huskies went on a game-deciding run to result in a 22-8 nonconference victory at the WU Athletics Complex on Thursday.
The Wildcats (0-3) scored back-to-back goals in the 14th minute of the first half to close the deficit to 11-7, but the Huskies (1-0) scored the final seven goals of the opening half to widen the gap and take control.
In a back and forth 10 minutes of action, the Wildcats continued to battle to keep the game close. Down 3-1, Lashay Ross and La'Dae Boykin scored back-to-back goal to knot the game at three, before the duo was at it again with back-to-back goals to bring the Wildcats to within 6-5 with 20:25 left on the clock.
The Huskies went on a quick 5-0 spurt to grab an 11-5 command, but Mariah Spencer scored on a free position shot and Ross tacked on another to get the Wildcats back to within 11-7 with 15:35 showing on the scoreboard.
But Bloomsburg took control of the game from there, using 19 first half turnovers to score 18 first half goals, including the final seven goals before the break in the final 12 minutes of action.
Boykin scored the first goal of the second half, but Bloomsburg controlled the clock and tallied four more goals to close out the scoring, 22-8.
The Wildcats out-drew the Huskies, 19-13, in the contest, led by Ross' eight and Boykin's six, but committed 28 turnovers to the Huskies' 12. The Wildcats also went 10-of-18 on clear attempts while the Huskies were able to get the field successfully 20-of-22 times.
Boykin scored four goals for the Wildcats while Ross chipped in with three marks. Spencer's second career goal and Alexis Miller's first career assist round out the Wildcats scoring. Christina Ziegler led the defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
The Wildcats continue to play against tough PSAC opponents with their next contest, as they head to nationally No. 18 Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday. The opening draw is set for 3:00 p.m.
