Women’s Lacrosse Stretches Winning Streak to Three Straight with 18-6 Win over Queens (N.Y.)

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team used a variety of scorers to get back Queens (N.Y.), 18-6, in its 2019 home opener on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.

Eighth different Wildcats (3-3) scored in the contest, led by Lashay Ross' five goals and two assists for a team high seven points. The Wildcats were also able to keep the offensive pressure on the Knights (0-2) throughout the majority of the contest by winning the draw control battle, 20-6, for the game, including 13-3 in the first half.

The Knights scored on the man advantage with 19:00 minutes left to bring the visitors to within 3-2, but the Wildcats answered with three straight goals and on a 5-1 run to take control of the contest. Brooke Siebert and Valerie Bragg scored on free position attempts to give the Wildcats a 6-2 lead before Ross and Maddie Day beat the goalkeeper to put the home team up 8-3 with 10:24 left in the first half.

After Queens scored to make it 8-4, the Wildcats ended the half by scoring the final three goals, getting a mark from Ross sandwiched around two goals from Alexis Miller to head into the break leading 11-4.

The teams traded the first two goals of the second half before the Wildcats put the game away with six straight goals to grab an 18-5 lead with 4:23 left in regulation.

Maddie Day ended with four goals while Brooke Siebert added a hat trick and an assist for four points. Alexis Miller scored twice while Delaney Steele scored a goal and added a team high four assists.

Siebert also led the team with 11 draw controls and six ground balls while Maris Allen scooped up six draw controls in the game. Lashay Ross led the team with five caused turnovers.

Tori Grubowski made three saves in the first half to earn the win while Maddie Hurm stopped two attempts in the second half to secure the victory.

The Wildcats will take a three-game winning streak into their next contest next weekend, as they play host to another ECC opponent NYIT. The opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
