PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - After losing to Holy Family exactly one week ago, the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team got its revenge on a bigger stage, taking down the Tigers, 18-11, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament First Round on Tuesday night at Tiger Field.
With the win, the fifth seeded Wildcats move on to face 2022 CACC Regular Season Champion and No. 1 seed Georgian Court on Friday in the CACC Tournament Semifinals. The game will be at 12:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the GCU Turf Field.
The Wildcats got off to a fast start on Tuesday night, scoring the first three goals and taking a 5-1 lead with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Ella Baynes, Maddie Day, and Campbell Heller scored the first three goals and then Heller tallied back-to-back marks after the Tigers got on the board to lead 5-1. But the Tigers scored the final two goals of the quarter, as the Wildcats took a 5-3 lead into the second.
Campbell Heller scored her fourth of the first half to start the second before Makenzie Stritzinger scored a women-down goal to lead 7-3 with 7:12 left before the half. The teams traded the next five goals to end the half, as the Wildcats led 9-6 at the break.
Taylor Lambeth and Maddie Day scored the first two goals of the third quarter as Maddie Day started to heat up. The Tigers closed the gap to 11-8 but then Maddie Day scored in transition with an assist from Zorah Perry and Taylor Lambeth found the back of the net to make it 13-8 after the third quarter.
After Holy Family scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to cut it to 13-9, the Wildcats scored the next five goals, with three coming from Maddie Day, to take a commanding 18-9 lead with 5:34 to play. The Tigers scored the final two goals of the game, but it was too little too late for the fourth seeded Tigers.
Maddie Day scored seven goals while Taylor Lambeth scored three and dished out a game high six assists for nine points. Campbell Heller scored five goals while adding an assist. Amelie Gamache led the way with six draws.
Torie Grubowski made 11 saves in the first half while Katie Vindigni came on in the second half and made 10 saves to secure the win.
In the other First Round matchup, No. 3 Dominican defeated No. 6 Post, 26-12, to advance to the Semifinals on Friday as well. The Chargers will play No. 2 Jefferson in the other Semifinal.
The Wildcats have advanced to the CACC Tournament Semifinals in 2019 and 2021 (there was no tournament in 2020) under head coach Kevin Day and will be making their seventh appearance into the CACC Tournament Semifinals in program history.
