Wilmington Women’s Soccer Edged by Felician, 1-0, in CACC Opener

A free kick goal in the 61st minute stands for Felician as they defeat the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 1-0, in both team's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Center.

The Wildcats (0-3, 0-1 CACC) outshot the Golden Falcons (2-1-1, 1-0 CACC), 6-5, in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net as Julia Sheridan and the Felician defense pitched the shutout.

Wilmington put 13 shots towards Sheridan in goal, but only had three of which were on frame all night, as Sheridan was able to come up with all three saves. The Golden Falcons outshot the Wildcats, 14-13, and attempted more corners, 8-3, for the match.

The game was decided in the 61st minute, as Macki Groves scored her third goal of the season 60:19 into the match. On a free kick, Groves received a pass from Kirsten Mortelliti before touching it home inside the right post, beating Wildcat goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams for the goal. Williams made three saves in goal for the Wildcats.

For the remaining 29 minutes, the Wildcats outshot the Golden Falcons, 5-2, including a pair of shots that were saved by Sheridan to secure the shutout.

Junior Rebecca Sowers led the team with four shots, one of which was on goal. Freshman Carin Essex-Arline tallied three shots with on one on frame while La'Dae Boykin picked up the final shot on goal for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats return home for their next contest, as they welcome reigning CACC Regular Season Champion Holy Family on Thursday at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening kick is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
