Women’s Soccer Scores First But Fall on the Road, 4-1, to LIU Post

Despite scoring the first goal of the match the Wilmington University women's soccer team dropped a nonconference match at LIU Post, 4-1, on Thursday afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Park.

The Pioneers (9-1) came back on the strength of a Susanne Vistnes hat trick, as she scored three straight goals for the home team to secure the victory. The loss was the fifth straight for the Wildcats (2-9). LIU Post received one vote in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire Division II National Poll and is fourth in the East Region Poll.

Redshirt freshman Loran Wyrough started things off for the Wildcats early in the contest, scoring on the first opportunity for the visitors. Freshman Chandler Lages chipped a ball into the box to a wide-open Wyrough who tapped it into the net for the 1-0 lead just 10:03 into the match.

But the rest of the half was all LIU Post, as they went on to outshoot the Wildcats, 10-1, in the opening 45 minutes. The Pioneers broke through in the 34th minute when Vistnes put in the first of her three goals to tie the match.

Vistnes scored the eventual game-winner less than two minutes later, putting the home team ahead 35:49 into the match. Late into the second half, Vistnes secured her hat trick in the 80th minute, getting the third assist of the afternoon from Lauren Bellone and tucking it into the near post 79:01 into the match.

Two minutes later, LIU Post's Morgan Kitton added an insurance goal with her first of the season, putting the final goal on the board 81:15 into the match.

The Pioneers were outshot, 23-3, for the match while the home team also earned more corners, 9-3.

Kierstyn Williams secured eight saves while starting in goal for the Wildcats before giving way to Gabby LeGendre for the final 12 minutes. Hreffie Agnarsdottir made one stop on Wyrough's second shot of the afternoon to earn the victory.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday when they host Bloomfield at the WU Athletics Complex. Saturday is soccer's Breast Cancer Awareness Match, as the teams will be donning their pink uniforms. The women start things off at 12 p.m., followed by the men at 2:30 p.m.
