CACC Quarterfinal Loss Brings an End to the 2014 Wilmington Women’s Soccer Season

The Wilmington University women's soccer season came to a close on Monday afternoon as the team fell to top seeded Philadelphia in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Quarterfinal, 2-0, at Ravenhill Field.

The Wildcats (6-12) had a three game winning streak snapped which helped propel them into the CACC Tournament, earning the No. 8 seed. Philadelphia (12-6-1) moves on to play No. 5 Felician which upset No. 4 Caldwell in the CACC Tournament Semifinals hosted by Post University.

The Rams took it to the Wildcats early in the contest, scoring both of their goals in the opening 15 minutes of play. Wildcat goalkeeper Julia Brown made four stops in the first half to keep the halftime deficit at 2-0.

Philadelphia got on the board just 1:04 into the match, scoring off a corner. Nicole Raab scored her first goal of the season off a corner from Patrice Maro and a flicked on header by Morgan Graus.

The Rams' Sarah VanBuskirk gave the home team a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute, scoring her first of the season off a pass from Meagan Yates 14:03 into the match.

The Wildcats matched the play of the Rams in the second half but were still unable to solve the Philadelphia defense that allowed just two goals in conference play through the regular season.

The Rams outshot the Wildcats, 19-0, for the game, earning more corners, 6-0, than the Wildcats as well. Brown recorded two saves in the second half to give the Wildcats a chance.

The loss means today was the final game for seven individuals as the 2014 season comes to a close. Seniors Kaitlyn Atmore, Rebecca Prentice, Chelsea Grace, and Brown, as well as juniors Ashley Kroll and Rebecca Sowers all played their final games as a Wildcat this afternoon.
