NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 2-0 loss against Queens on Sunday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

A header in the 18th minute broke the scoreless tie in favor of the visiting Knights (1-1), but the Wildcats (0-1) were able to keep Queens at bay for the remaining of the first half.

The Knights held most of the possession throughout the first half, out-shooting the Wildcats, 7-3, and taking more corners, 5-0, than the home team. One of the Knights' corners resulted in the lone goal of the first half.

Adriana Mendrinos sent the corner to the middle of the goal mouth and Bridget Gleason was there to redirect it home with a header for the 1-0 lead 17:35 into the match.

Loran Wyrough, Kim Richer, and Carin Essex-Arline all produced shots for the Wildcats in the first half, forcing Queens' netminder Megan Deak to make two saves.

Queens came out quick in the second half, putting four shots towards Kierstyn Williams and the Wildcats' goal in the first five minute. Williams made three saves to keep the Wildcats in the contest.

The Knights added to their lead in the 78th minute, getting a through ball down the middle of the field from Alexis Qualle. Erin Vernillo raced onto it and had a one on one with Williams, sliding the ball past Williams for the 2-0 lead.

Williams recorded six saves on Sunday for the Wildcats while Deak recorded two saves for the game for the Knights.

The Wildcats have five days off before their next contest, as they prepare for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener next Saturday at Bloomfield. The opening tip is set for 12:00 p.m. in Bloomfield, N.J.
