BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - The defense sunk its heels in against the seventh ranked team in the country, but Bridgeport scored a pair of second half goal to defeat the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 2-0, on Thursday night on Knights' Field.
The Wildcats (5-5) were out shot, 14-0, in the first half but sophomore goalkeeper made five saves and the defense cleared the ball off the line on a shot to keep the NSCAA Division II Nationally Ranked No. 7 team off the board in the opening 45 minutes.
The offensive pressure continued in the early going of the second half for the Purple Knights (9-1), as they were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the 56th minute. A through ball freed Gabby Reis to be in on Williams, as she was able to beat the Wilmington net minder low for the 1-0 lead.
Bridgeport quickly added to its lead, scoring five minutes later to move ahead, 2-0. Nicola Worthington scored her first goal of the season on a long shot, receiving a backwards pass from Hanne Neby 61:10 into the match.
The Wildcats' first shot of the match wasn't until the 75th minute, and the Wildcats force Bridgeport goalkeeper Melanie Ziegner to make two stops for the shutout.
Wilmington's Alexis Perry and Kim Richer registered the shots on goal for the Wildcats, but the Purple Knights out shot the Wildcats, 22-3, for the match. Williams made six saves in goal for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday, as they head to Nyack to take part in a soccer doubleheader. The women start things off with a 12 p.m. whistle.
