Wilmington Women’s Soccer Blanked, 6-0, by Regionally Ranked Mercy

NEWARK, Del. - - The fourth ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll, Mercy took down the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 6-0, on Thursday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Mercy (4-1) scored twice in the first half before extending the lead with four goals in the second half. The Wildcats (3-2-1) had the first opportunity of the contest but the Mavericks came up with the save.

The Mavericks got on the board in the 10th minute, as leading scorer Ally Boots made a run down the left side before beating Kierstyn Williams to the far post for the 1-0 lead. Jessica Brandt made it 2-0 in the first half, converting a penalty kick for the first of her two goals in the match in the 27th minute.

After the break, the Mavericks quickly scored their third goal of the game as Alyssa Iannuzzi put in a pass from Natalia Elizarraras in the 51st minute for the first of her two goals in the second half. Brandt blasted one in from outside the penalty area for the 4-0 lead before Iannuzzi scored off a corner kick in the 62nd minute. Heidi Serna finished the scoring in the 69th minute, finishing a feed from Lauren Calderaro for the 6-0 lead.

The Wildcats were outshot, 20-4, in the contest, including 13-1 in the second half. The Mavericks also took seven corners to the Wildcats' zero.

Mercy starting goalkeeper Melissa Torres made two saves for the win before giving way to Ashley Price for the second half. Williams made eight saves in the loss.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday as they travel to Bloomfield to complete their four games in seven days stretch. The opening kick is set for 1:30 p.m.
