NEWARK, Del. - - Jessica Unsihuay tied the match, 1-1, early in the first half, but the Wilmington University women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 nonconference decision to LIU Post on Thursday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Pioneers (3-2) went into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead and tacked on two more in the second half to set the Wildcats (3-5) back and snap the two-game winning streak.
LIU Post scored the first goal of the game in the ninth minute, getting down to the endline before a centering pass wasn't cleared and ended up in the back of the net off the foot of Sydney Pasquarella.
But the Wildcats answered back quickly, as Jessica Unsihuay was the recipient of an Emily Navarette cross form the left corner. Standing at the six-yard box in the middle of the goal, Unsihuay's first attempt was blocked, but she kept on the ball and blasted home her second attempt to tie the game 11:18 into the match.
LIU Post went on to out-shoot the Wildcats, 8-2, in the first half, and in doing so took the lead in the 27th minute. A long free-kick turned into the game-winning goal as leading scorer Julia Duffy got a head on the ball for the 2-1 lead.
The Pioneers put the game away in the second half, as Pasquarella scored her second goal of the game in the 60th minute and Emily Tirado added her first career goal in the 88th minute to cap the scoring, 4-1.
Senior goalkeeper Kate Tubo kept the Wildcats in the game with 10 saves, but the Wildcats were out-shot, 20-4, in the match. The Pioneers also earned more corners, 8-0, in the contest.
The Wildcats five-game homestand continues when the Wildcats get back to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The women start a CACC doubleheader against Nyack with a 12:00 p.m. start at the Complex.
