ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - - A pair of second half goals carried the Wilmington University women's soccer team to a 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road victory at Dominican on Saturday.
After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats (8-8-1, 7-3-1 CACC) received goals from Krysta Memis and Cassidy McErlain while Kate Tubo made five saves in goal for the sixth shutout of the season.
Before the scoring started, it was the Chargers (3-12-1, 3-7-1 CACC) that came out of the halftime break with an edge. They had the first three shots of the half, including a pair of corners before the Wildcats settled in.
A corner got the Wildcats into the attacking zone in the 55th minute, and it was a Rebecca Dolhansky shot in the 59th minute that set up the eventual game-winner from Krysta Memis. Dolhansky's initial shot was saved by Charger goalkeeper Autumn Vazquez, but the rebound couldn't be corralled and Krysta Memis was there to stuff home the rebound 58:14 into the match.
Looking for an insurance goal, the Wildcats turned up the heat in the 82nd minute, putting back-to-back shots from Memis and Lina Boussif on frame while a third by Cassidy McErlain was wide. McErlain found her accuracy in the 87th minute however, scoring from the top of the box off a pass from Memis for the 2-0 lead with only 3:21 left in the game.
It was Memis' third goal and sixth assist of the year, giving her 12 points overall. McErlain is now tied atop the leaderboard for the Wildcats with four goals on the year.
The Wildcats outshot the Chargers, 15-11, despite giving up more corners, 4-2.
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season, and are fighting for a home playoff game, when they head to Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats are currently tied for fourth with 22 points in the CACC Standings with two other teams. The game at Goldey-Beacom is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
