PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Two chances in the final minute of play stayed out of the back of the net and the sixth seeded Wilmington University women's soccer team's upset bid in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament First Round was thwarted by third seeded Holy Family, 2-1, on Monday afternoon at RAMP Playground.
Holy Family (12-4-1) scored early in each half, taking a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute of action. La'Dae Boykin cut the deficit in half with her fourth goal of the season in the 69th minute, and had a last chance effort in the final minute of play that went just wide of the right post.
With the win, the Tigers advance to the CACC Tournament Semifinals to take on No. 2 Goldey-Beacom on Friday at Post University.
The Tigers capitalized on a turnover in the midfield for their first goal. A backwards pass to the backline was intercepted and Jacqueline Ziegler found herself in on Kate Tubo all alone in the 18th minute.
Emily Navarrete had the best chance for the Wildcats in the first half, but Brianna Pudlo came sliding out off Navarrete's first touch inside the box to stall the momentum in the 28th minute.
The Wildcats came out controlled the pace of play early in the second half, but another mishap in the midfield led to a Tigers' goal. Holy Family's Bree Rock one-timed a bouncing ball with her left foot, up and over Tubo in the 52nd minute for the 2-0 lead.
Wilmington continued to press and cut the deficit in half in the 69th minute. La'Dae Boykin's first touch set her up in front of the Tigers' goal, and she buried her fourth of the season off a set piece from Rebecca Dolhansky.
The next shot for the Wildcats were chances inside a minute. Jessica Unsihuay's toe poke couldn't sneak under the sliding goalkeeper and Boykin's rebound shot curved just wide of the right post with 31 seconds to play.
Holy Family outshot the Wildcats, 15-6, in the match, including 8-3 on goal. Kate Tubo recorded six saves while Pudlo made two stops for the win.
Dolhansky's assist was the 30th of her career, which will leave her atop the women's soccer career record book in her final season.
