NEWARK, Del. – The freshmen would lead the Wilmington University women's soccer team to a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Dominican on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex on Homecoming Weekend.
In the second game of the Homecoming Festivities, the Wildcats (3-3-1, 2-0-1 CACC) started out hot, as they had five shots on goal compared to Dominican's (2-6-0, 0-2 CACC) one in the first 12 minutes of play. With one second until the 18th minute mark, Lina Boussif would take a free kick near midfield for the Wildcats giving a chance for Sammie Bennett to head it over the Chargers' defense for her first collegiate goal to give WilmU a 1-0 lead.
Wilmington would maintain possession for most of the half, allowing the Chargers to only get two shots on goal. Alex Keck would play a ball into the box in the first five minutes of the second half to Justine Sommer who got a header off, but would be saved by the Chargers keeper. A minute later, Kasie Lambert would give it a try with shot from outside the top of the box, but it wouldn't be until the 62nd minute of play that Emily Navarrete played a ball inside the box to Samantha Emmi to get it past the goalie to give WIlmU a 2-0 lead.
Now with over 11 minutes left to play in regulation, Lambert would take a corner for the Wildcats to give freshman Kailey Hyland a chance on a scramble in front of the net for her first collegiate goal, which put WilmU up by three.
Freshmen Sammie Bennett, Samantha Emmi, and Kailey Hyland all scored for the Wildcats, as senior Lina Boussif and sophomore Emily Navarrete had an assist. Emily Camp made one save in the net for her second shutout of the year.
WilmU had 22 shots, while letting the Chargers only get off five throughout the game.
The Wildcats will head to Holy Family on Tuesday afternoon for their next game. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Tiger Field.
