FLUSHING, N.Y. - - Emily Navarrete tied the match with her first goal of the season, but Queens answered back and defeated the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 2-1, in the team's final nonconference contest on Wednesday afternoon.
It was the final nonconference contest for the Wildcats (3-6-1) in the 2019 season, as they return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action for the six remaining games of the regular season. The loss was the third straight by the Wildcats.
The Wildcats were matching the Knights (6-5) in shots in the early going, with Lina Boussif getting the first shot on goal in the 21st minute. But the Knights had back-to-back shots in the 31st minute, with the second beating Wilmington goalkeeper Emily Camp 31:05 into the contest for the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats answered with four shots in the rest of the first half, but the visitors went into the halftime break trailing 1-0.
Boussiff had back-to-back shots saved early in the second half, and then Daryan Fennal got in on the act, but her shot in the 56th minute was also saved.
The next Wilmington shot tied the game however, as Emily Navarrete beat Shenae Kreps with a shot, knotting the game at 1-1 57:39 into the contest. Jessica Unsihuay picked up the assist.
But the Knights answered right back, putting their next shot in the back of the net, 59:10 into the match, for the 2-1 lead.
Kailey Hyland had a shot off a corner in the 69th minute, but it sailed high and that would be the last shot for the Wildcats in the contest.
The Knights led in shots, 14-12, and earned more corners, 4-3, in the close contest. Emily Camp made four stops in goal for the Wildcats while Kreps made four saves for the win.
The Wildcats return to action Friday night, as they head to Bloomfield for a game under the lights. They will play second in the CACC doubleheader, with the opening whistle scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
