NEWARK, Del. – Despite outshooting Caldwell, 15-7 the Wilmington University women's soccer team could not overcome a 2-1 deficit as they fell to the Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Wilmington (4-8-1, 3-4-1 CACC) put eight shots on goal to the Cougars' (6-3-2, 5-1-2 CACC) two in the second half, but a goal from the Cougars in the 70th minute gave them a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars would get out to a fast start in the opening minutes of the game, as they put three shots on goal within the first nine minutes, but the Wildcats started to regain possession in the later part of the half, as Kasie Lambert and Jessica Unsihuay got off back-to-back shots, before a corner kick opportunity, but could not connect.
Wilmington would end the first half with a shot from Lambert and another corner, but the Cougars defense would hold of the Wildcats to keep it a scoreless game heading into the break.
Trying to keep the momentum from the end of the first half going, Emily Navarrete would get a long low cross from Lambert near the left post. She put a cross in front of the net for Jessica Unsihuay on the back post who scored to give the Wildcats the first goal of the game just four minutes into the second half.
It would be a short lead for WilmU though, as the Cougars answered in the 60th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Unsihuay would get another shot off on goal soon after, but the Cougars' keeper would make the stop. With 20 minutes left to play, Caldwell would have a chance as Emily Camp tried to make a sliding grab, but was short for an open net goal to take the 2-1 lead.
Wilmington would have a chance to tie things up in the 75th minute, as a ball was inside the box for Justine Sommer and Kasie Lambert to get a shot off, but the Cougars defense would be there to clear the ball off the line to keep it a 2-1 ballgame.
Jessica Unsihuay netted her third goal of the year, as Emily Navarrete made her second assist of the season. Kasie Lambert had five shots, as Unsihuay had four for the Wildcats. Emily Camp made two saves in the net.
The Wildcats will head to Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night for a matchup with the Griffins beginning at 7:00 p.m.
