NYACK, N.Y. - - Freshman Rockesha Dayes buried her shot in the 85th minute, giving the Wilmington University women's soccer team its second straight win, defeating Nyack, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Nyack High School.
The win gives the Wildcats (6-8-1, 5-4-1 CACC) 16 points in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings, sitting in sixth place with nine points difference between them and the ninth place team.
The Wildcats outshot the Warriors (2-11-1, 2-7-1 CACC) in the first half, but Nyack goalkeeper Nicole Benesch made four stops to keep the game scoreless going into the half. Kasie Lambert had two shots on goal while Justine Sommer and Jessica Unsihuay each had a shot on goal in the first half.
The scoring started early in the second half, as Kailey Hyland found the back of the net in the 50th minute. Hyland almost made it a 2-0 game less than a minute later with another shot on goal, but Benesch made the stop.
It didn't take long for the Warriors to retaliate, though, as Parker Betts tied the game in the 54th minute. It looked as though the Warriors were going to take the lead in the 56th minute, but a shot by Camila Parada was cleared off the line, keeping the game at 1-1.
Jessica Unsihuay, Justine Sommer, and Crystal Kline put shots on goal in five-minute span, but they were all saved by Benesch.
With the ball starting in the backfield for Wilmington, the ball was played up the middle to Jessica Unsihuay. Unsihuay played a centering ball to Lina Boussif, who played one more pass to Rockesha Dayes in the left side of the box. Dayes was alone with the keeper and buried the low shot 84:18 into the match. No other shots were recorded in the final five minutes.
The Wildcats outshot the Warriors, 16-9, including shots on goal, 11-5. Emily Camp made three saves for the win.
The Wildcats have two games remaining in the regular season, looking to be one of the top eight teams in the CACC at the end of the season. They face off against cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday at home, scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start. Tuesday is also Senior Day for the Wildcats, honoring Lina Boussif and Alexis Perry prior to the game.
