NEWARK, Del. - - A first half goal proved to be enough for Molloy, as they escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Wilmington University women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Molloy (4-0-0) won its fourth straight contest by a 1-0 score to start the season. The Wildcats (1-1-1) are proving to hang with the perennial east region power teams in the early going of the 2021 season, even outshooting the Lions, 8-5, on Saturday.
Molloy got on the board in the 28th minute, turning a fortuitous bounce into the lone goal of the game. Joanna Graca broke from the pack down the right side of the field. She put a shot on frame that Emily Camp came diving out to get a hand on, but he rebound bounced right to Sienna Nicolich who redirected the ricochet into the back of the net.
Krysta Memis had a chance with 18 minutes left in the second half deep inside the box. Alexis Johnson played the long ball to Memis in the box, but her turn around shot sailed wide of the net.
Samantha Emmi had a free kick opportunity from 25 yards out, but her attempt was saved with 10 minutes to play, which ended up being the last shot the Wildcats would get off in the contest.
The Wildcats outshot the Lions, 6-2, in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Lion goalkeeper Jackie Carty made three saves for her fourth shutout of the year.
Another tough matchup waits for the Wildcats this week, as they got to Mercy on Wednesday afternoon. The opening whistle in Dobbs Ferry, New York is set for 12:00 p.m.
