NEWARK, Del. - - The offense exploded for the Wilmington University women's soccer team in a 6-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Nyack on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The win was the third in a row and fourth in their last five matches for the Wildcats, as they improved to 5-2-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The six goals were the most by the Wildcats since an 8-1 victory against Concordia during the 2018 Homecoming festivities on September 29, 2018.
The Wildcats received six goals from five different players, with only Krysta Memis tallying multiple goals. Five of the six goals were assisted on as well.
Krysta Memis started the scoring in the 17th minute, as Jimena Garcia Risoto played a through ball down the middle of the field. Memis scored her second of the year with a low shot to the goalkeeper's right for the 1-0 lead.
The same duo flip-flopped roles in the 21st minute, as Jimena Garcia Risoto and Memis played a give-and-go ball at the top of the box. Garcia Risoto's shot to the far-left post was in for her second of the year, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Lauren Hoelke got in on the action in the 28th minute, getting behind the defense after a long ball from Jimena Garcia Risoto. Hoelke got on the end of it and into the right side of the 18-yard box. She went near post for her third goal of the year and the 3-0 Wilmington lead.
Freshman Kailynn Ortiz scored her first collegiate career goal in the 43rd minute, getting on the end of a flick on from Isabella Lundberg. Ortiz was in alone on the keeper and slotted the ball home to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Nyack played their best ball directly after halftime, getting in on the scoring chances but missing their opportunities. The Wildcats answered and put the game away moments later in the 51st minute.
Krysta Memis got loose again behind the defense after Manuela Restrepo headed a ball over the top. Memis' low shot found the far post again, giving her five points on the day and the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.
The final goal came from well outside the 18-yard box, as Samantha Emmi had another spectacular free-kick. After a foul, Emmi stepped up to the ball from 33-yards out and snuck her shot under the crossbar for her second of the year. the centerback also scored on freekick at Mercy.
The Wildcats led in shots, 15-3, and in corners, 7-2.
Wilmington has a midweek bye this week and won't return to action until next Saturday when they travel to Post. The opening whistle is set for 12:00 p.m. at LaMoy Field in Waterbury, Connecticut on October 9.
