Women’s Soccer Scores First But Falls to Adelphi To Close Opening Weekend

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wildcats hosted the Panthers of Adelphi University on Sunday afternoon, falling 5-1 at the WU Athletics Complex to wrap up the opening weekend of 2022 competition.

Wilmington (0-1-1) jumped out to an early lead five minutes into the contest. Emilie Larsen scored for a second consecutive game off a second-effort interception that led Larsen to a 1v1 with the keeper. Larsen found the back of the net to make it 1-0 Wildcats just 4:56 into the match.

The Panthers (1-1-0) answered back in the middle of the first half with two separate goals to make it 2-1 after 45 minutes. Adelphi scored in the 26th minute and again in the 38th minute to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

Mio Nakajima continued to be a bright spot for the Wildcats as she made six saves in the contest, including three in each half.  

The Wildcats fired off eight shots in the contest. Three shots came in the first half and five in the second half. The Panthers controlled much of the offensive possession with 19 shots and eight corners in today's match. The Panthers scored in the 52nd, 64th, and 73rd minutes to widen the lead.

The Wildcats will travel up to Manchester, New Hampshire on Wednesday to face-off against Saint Anselm College. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM.
