Lorne Bickley and Begona Gomar Honored with CACC Rookie of the Week Awards

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A pair of first year student-athletes continue to impress on the playing field for Wilmington University as men's soccer freshman Lorne Bickley and women's tennis Begona Gomar have been named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookies of the Week in their respective sports.

The men's soccer team went 2-0 this and Bickley (St. Helier, Jersey) had a hand in each victory. Making his first two starts of the season, Bickley opened the scoring at West Chester in the 20th minute. He headed home a corner kick from Fredrik Bentdal to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in a game in which they would win, 2-1. Bickley tied the team's CACC contest at Caldwell, 1-1, in the 37th minute, finishing off an over-the-top ball from Geoff Velasquez and beating the drawn out goalkeeper to the ball. He is now tied atop the CACC with five goals on the season.

Gomar (Valencia, Spain) helped the women's tennis team to a 3-1 week overall, but defeating all three CACC opponents. Gomar went a perfect 4-0 at number two singles last week while also going 3-1 at number one doubles. Her week started with a 6-3 and 6-0 sweep in singles and a 9-7 victory in doubles at USciences before defeating Holy Family, 6-4 and 6-0, in singles and 8-3 in doubles. Gomar easily defeated her Chestnut Hill opponents, 6-0 and 6-0, in singles but need to overcome a 6-1 deficit to win, 9-7, in doubles. The freshman capped her week with a singles win, 6-3 and 7-5, at Queens, but falling in doubles, 8-3. She was named a CACC Co-Rookie of the Week USciences' Karla Miletic.

The men's soccer team is now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the CACC. They host Holy Family on Tuesday before heading to LIU Post on Saturday.

The women's tennis team boasts a 4-3 overall record and sits in third place in the CACC with a 3-1 mark. The Wildcats host Caldwell in their first ever home match on Wednesday against Caldwell at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
