AKRON, Ohio - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team started the IUP Tournament with an 8-1 loss to Wayne State (Michigan) on Saturday afternoon at the Towpath Tennis Center.
The Warriors (11-9) took all three doubles matches to open the game with a quick 3-0 lead. Wayne State finished off the Wildcats (8-5) with five of the six singles events for the 8-1 victory.
Anushka Sathe picked up the lone win for the Wildcats at No. 1 singles, defeating Dasha Kuznetsova, 6-2, 3-6, and 6-4.
Laura Gil also went three sets at No. 3 singles, winning the first set, 6-4, before dropping the final two sets, 6-1 and 10-6.
The doubles duo of Begona Gomar and Andrea Ribalta had the best opportunity to win in the doubles events, falling 8-5.
The Wildcats close out the IUP Tournament with a Sunday morning match against nationally No. 47 Grand Valley State. The first serve is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
