Women’s Tennis Comes Back to Defeat Adelphi, 5-4, in East Regional Matchup

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - - Trailing following the doubles events, the Wilmington University women's tennis team came back to defeat Adelphi, 5-4, in a battle between two east regionally ranked opponents on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (9-6) could only come away with a victory at number three doubles but came back and won four of the singles matches to comeback and defeat Adelphi (12-6). The Panthers are ranked No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA East Regional Poll while the Wildcats are ranked No. 9.

Milica Knezevic and Sabrina Blasi-Smith won at number three doubles, 8-3, to put the Wildcats on the board, but they trailed 2-1 following the doubles matches.

Begona Gomar got the ball rolling at number two singles, winning the first set 6-2 before picking up the victory with a retirement. Laura Gil picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory at number three singles, evening the singles matches as the Panthers won at No. 1 and No. 4.

Trailing 4-3, the Wildcats came away with victories at No. 5 singles as Knezevic won, 6-2 and 6-1, before Blasi-Smith secured the victory at No. 6 singles, 6-0 and 6-2.

The win keeps the Wildcats alive for the ITA Regional Championships as the program's inaugural season winds down.

The Wildcats final regular season finale is set for next Saturday at LIU Post. The first serve is set for 1:00 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
