Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Regular Season with 7-2 Victory at LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis 2016-17 inaugural regular season came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 victory at LIU Post at the LIU Post Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats took two of the three doubles events to start the scoring before finishing the match by taking five of the six singles matches. The win closes out the first year of the Wildcats women's tennis program with a 10-6 record. The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 8 in the NCAA East Region rankings.

The duo of Begona Gomar and Andrea Ribalta won at No. 2 double, 8-1, while Sabrina Blasi-Smith and Milica Knezevic gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead following the doubles matches with a similar 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Knezevic and Blasi-Smith carried that momentum into their singles matches, each winning quickly, 6-0 and 6-0. Knezevic won at No. 5 singles before Blasi-Smith put the Wildcats up 4-1 at No. 6 singles.

Ribalta clinched the victory for the Wildcats with a win at No. 4 singles, defeating her opponent, 6-3 and 6-0.

The featured battle of the match was at No. 2 singles, as both players were ranked in the latest ITA Individuals rankings. Gomar, ranked No. 18 overall, was able to take down Shanice Arthur, ranked No. 12 overall, 6-3, 2-1 (ret.), to keep the ball rolling in favor of the Wildcats.

Laura Gil gave the Wildcats their seventh and final point with a victory at No. 3 singles, but needed three sets to get it done. Gil dropped the first set, 6-3, but bounced back to force a third set with a 6-4 second set. She then picked up the win with a 10-1 third set victory.

The Wildcats are hoping to be one of the six teams called to participate in the upcoming NCAA East Regional Tournament later this month. The NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Selection Show is April 25 at 8:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
