Women’s Tennis Opens 2017 with 8-1 Victory at Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team opened its 2017 fall season with an 8-1 victory at Stockton on Friday afternoon, playing at the Stockton Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats (1-0) won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 advantage into the singles matches. The Wildcats earned points at 1-5 singles before Stockton (0-1) was able to get on the board at number six singles.

Junior Anushka Sathe and sophomore Andrea Ribalta were the first to finish at number one doubles, winning 8-1 for the first point of the match. Sophomore Begona Gomar and junior Tess Paya also won, 8-1, at number two doubles, before sophomore Laura Gil and freshman Mallory Nolte picked up the sweep, 8-6, at number three doubles.

Gil then carried that momentum into the singles events, getting off the court first for the Wildcats with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number two singles. Gomar wrapped up the team victory with the fifth win of the match, taking number one singles, 6-1 and 6-1.

Ribalta kept the Wildcats on top with a with at number five singles, 6-0 and 6-1, before Tess Paya won her first singles match as a Wildcat, 6-2 and 6-1, at number four.

The Ospreys eanred their lone point at number six singles before Sathe wrapped up the season opener with a 6-0 and 6-4 victory at number three singles.

The Wildcats are set for their home opener with their next match when they host East Region power NYIT at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Tuesday, September 5. The first service is set for 3:00 p.m.
