Women’s Tennis Fights Back to Earn 7-2 Nonconference victory against UDC

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team battled back from a 2-1 deficit by sweeping all six singles events, taking the 7-2 nonconference victory over the District of Columbia on Tuesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (6-5) battled back to win their fourth straight contest, fighting back after falling behind, 2-1, after the doubles matches.  They went on to take all six singles matches; including a pair of late match comebacks.

The home team got their lone point in doubles at number two, as Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe earned an 8-3 victory. The Firebirds (4-4) earned wins at number one doubles and number three doubles, needing to take the doubles match against Jane Malygina and Tess Paya in the tiebreaker, 7-4.

Laura Gil tied the match with a win at number two singles, leading in the first set, 5-1, before the Firebird opponent retired. Gomar kept her momentum going into the singles matches, defeating the ITA East Region's 15th ranked player Dominika Hadnadova, 6-2 and 6-2.

Tess Paya gave the Wildcats a 4-2 lead with a 6-2 and 6-0 victory at number six singles. Anushka Sathe secured the team victory with a win at number four singles, winning 6-3 and 6-4.

Freshman Jane Malygina found herself down 5-2 in the second set, but mounted a late game comeback to take the straight set victory at number three singles, 6-3 and 7-5. She remained undefeated at singles during her time as a Wildcat, moving to 5-0 after Tuesday.

Sophomore Andrea Ribalta capped the victory at number five singles, staging a late game comeback of her own. After taking the first set, 6-3, she fell in the second set, 6-3. Trailing 8-4 in the third set tiebreaker, Ribalta fought back to with the tiebreaker, 12-10.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action for their final two regular season contests in the fall. They head to Post on Thursday in a rescheduled match from September 30.
