NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A pair of Wilmington University women's tennis players were named First Team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, voted on by the league's head coaches, announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Sophomores Laura Gil and Begona Gomar were voted to the First Team on Tuesday after leading the Wildcats to a third place finish in the CACC during the regular season and the third seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament. Both were named All-CACC a season ago as freshman, as Gomar repeats on the First Team and Gil moves up from the Second Team last year.
Gil played at number two singles all fall, going 5-6 overall in dual matches and 3-3 in the CACC. Gil went 5-8 in dual matches in doubles this season, going 4-4 in CACC play. She went 3-4 at number one doubles and 2-4 in number three doubles.
In the CACC, Gil won at number two singles against Chestnut Hill, USciences, and Post. In doubles play, she defeated Chestnut Hill at number three, and USciences, Caldwell, and Holy Family at at number one doubles.
Gomar played at number one singles all fall, going 7-6 in dual matches. She went 2-1 against regionally ranked opponents in singles, defeating the eighth ranked player from Queens, and the 15th ranked player from the District of Columbia. In doubles, Gomar went 9-4 in dual matches, 7-4 at number two doubles and 2-0 at number three doubles. Overall, she was 7-1 in the CACC in doubles play.
In singles, Gomar won her final five matches, including four matches in conference play. She defeated Caldwell, Holy Family, UDC, Post, and Jefferson to close out the regular season. In doubles, she's won the final seven matches of the regular season, defeating Concordia, USciences, Caldwell, Holy Family, UDC, Post, and Jefferson.
USciences' Karla Miletic was voted as the CACC Player of the Year for the second year in a row while Goldey-Beacom's Fredrika Regner earned the CACC Rookie of the Year award while playing at number two singles. The Lightning's Joe Kissel was named the CACC Coach of the Year in a vote of the conference's sports information directors while Holy Family was voted the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award.
The CACC Tournament begins Tuesday with the First Round match. Goldey-Beacom and Concordia earned a bye in the first round for being the number one and two seeds, respectively. The third seeded Wildcats square off against sixth seeded Post while fourth seeded USciences hosts fifth seeded Jefferson in the other first round matchup.
The winners head to the CACC Tournament Semifinals hosted by Post University in Waterbury, Conn., on Saturday, October 21, with a champion being crowned on Sunday.
