Women’s Tennis Battle Tough Competition in Wayne State and #22 Grand Valley State in Ohio

STOW, OHIO - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team traveled to the Latuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio and competed against a pair of Midwest Regional opponents, falling to Wayne State (Mich.), 8-1, on Saturday before falling to nationally ranked No. 22 Grand Valley State, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon.

Tess Paya was the lone winner in the Wildcats' (11-8) loss to Wayne State, coming back from a first set loss to win in the tiebreak. She dropped the first set at number six singles, 6-2, but battles back to tie the match with a second set victory, 6-1. She then took the tiebreaker, 10-7, to put the Wildcats on the board.

On Sunday, Grand Valley State took all three doubles matches, winning 8-4, 8-3, and 8-0, to gain a quick 3-0 lead in the match. The Lakers earned their fourth point by default at number two singles before capturing the match at number four singles.

Laura Gil and Tess Paya were leading their contests when the match ended, as Gil won her first set at number three singles, 6-3. Paya won her first set, 7-5, and was leading the second set, 4-1, as the match ended. Begona Gomar was in a battle at number one singles as well, dropping the first set, 6-1, but had the second set tied, 5-5, when the game was called.

The Wildcats head to LIU Post next Saturday, April 14, to wrap up their 2018 spring season. First service is set for 11:0 p.m. on Long Island.
