Goldey-Beacom Nips Wilmington Women’s Tennis, 4-3, in Tight CACC Match

HOCKESSIN, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team went down to the wire with the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Champions, but narrowly dropped a 4-3 match with crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday afternoon at The Sanford School.

The Lightning took the doubles point by winning two out of the three doubles matches. The Wildcats' (1-2, 1-1 CAC) Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe won at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (7-1), but it wasn't enough as Goldey-Beacom won at No. 1, 6-1, and No. 3, 6-4.

Andrea Ribalta faced three match points at No. 6 singles in the tiebreak, but fought back to tie the set, 9-9, before going on to win the tiebreak, 12-10. She defeated Andrea Fresneda, 6-2, 2-6, and 1-0 (12-10).

Laura Gil gave the Wildcats a chance at No. 3 singles, defeating Maria Bruno, 6-3 and 6-4, while Tess Paya also made things interesting in the singles with a 6-3 and 7-5 victory over Elin Anderson at No. 5 singles.

But the Lightning were able to take the match by winning at No. 1 singles, 6-4 and 6-3, No. 2 singles, 6-3 and 6-3, and No.4 singles, 6-4 and 6-0, for the match.

The Wildcats wrap up the month of September with a final home match on Saturday, taking part in the 2018 Wilmington University Homecoming Weekend. They will welcome Jefferson to the Delcastle Tennis Center with the first serve expected at 1:00 p.m.
