NEWARK, Del. – The Wilmington University women's tennis team came out on top today with a 5-0 sweep over the University of the Sciences at the Delcastle Tennis Center in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday afternoon.
Begona Gomar had a big win for the Wildcats in number one singles, as she beat Karla Miletic, who is ranked seventh in the region according to ITA Tennis' final poll of 2017-18. Gomar fell in the first set, 6-2, but came back in the second and third set, 6-3 and 6-3 to beat Miletic. She is currently ranked 10th in the region for the Wildcats.
Anushka Sathe went into a third set tiebreaker, as she won the first set, 6-2, then dropped the second set, 6-4. Sathe came back to win the third set, 6-1, in number two singles.
Laura Gil and Marie Rondot won their singles matches in two sets at No. 3 and No.4, respectively, before rains forced No. 5 and No. 6 singles to go unfinished. Tess Paya and Andrea Ribalta each won the first set and were leading the second set when the rains came.
The Wildcats set the wheels in motion by winning all three doubles events for the single point to start the match.
The Wildcats will travel to the District of Columbia on Tuesday for a 12:00 p.m. start time with the Firebirds in a nonconference matchup.
