Women’s Tennis Falls in Spring Opener Against In-State Foe Delaware

WILMINGTON, Del. - - Division I in-state rival Delaware defeated the Wilmington University women's tennis team, 7-0, on Saturday night, playing their first match inside the new Delcastle Tennis Center.

Playing for the first time since they took the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships in the October, the Wildcats (9-5) couldn't overcome their NCAA Division I counterpart Blue Hens (7-9). It was the first meeting between the State of Delaware foes.

The combination of Tess Paya and Sabrina Blasi-Smith evened the doubles event at 1-1 with a win at number three, 6-4. But Laura Gil and Andrea Ribalta were defeated at No. 1 singles, 6-3, allowing the Blue Hens to take the doubles' point.

Anushka Sathe made a push at number two singles before falling 6-3 and 7-5. Begona Gomar dropped her match at number one singles, 6-4 and 6-3.

Delaware also played Goldey-Beacom earlier in the day and defeated the Lightning, 7-0. Delaware and GOldey-Beacom also faced each other in 2011.

The Wildcats return to their NCAA Division II schedule when they host Millersville on April 2 at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
