Begona Gomar Lifts Women’s Tennis to 6-1 Win Against Jefferson on Senior Day

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University tennis team sent off their one senior in style on Thursday, defeating Jefferson, 6-1, in their final regular season home match of the 2021-22 season at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

Prior to the match, the team honored Begona Gomar, and due to COVID and a redshirt season, is the final mainstay from the program's first season in 2016-17. She is a four-time All-CACC member, including three First Team All-CACC honors.

On Thursday, the Wildcats won both of their doubles matches for the point. Larize Nel and Fenna Swaan won at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, while Neus Ramos Moreno and Begona Gomar won at No. 2 doubles, 6-3.

The Wildcats picked up a win at No. 6 singles by default and then Fenna Swaan gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with a win at No. 5 singles, 6-1 and 6-3. Valentina Ivankovic gave the Wildcats the team win with a 6-3 and 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

Begona Gomar won on Senior Day at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-4, and the Marley Trifunovic won at No. 4 singles, coming back from down a set, 2-6, 6-1, and 11-9. The Rams got their lone win of the day at No. 1 singles, despite Jess Purdy coming back to win the second set, 6-2, to force a third set superset.

The Wildcats will travel to West Chester on Tuesday for another regional match prior to the postseason. The first serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
