Record-Breaking Season Comes to a Close for Wilmington Tennis in NCAA Division II National Tournament First Round

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - - The record-breaking season came to a close for the Wilmington University women's tennis team on Tuesday in the First Round of the 2022 NCAA Division II National Tournament, 4-0, to No. 3 UIndy at Sanlando Park.

The Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the first time in program history and finishes the season 17-4 overall. They won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship, as well as one of the East Regional Tournaments to advance to Tuesday.

The third seeded Greyhounds (19-2) haven't given up a team point since April 9, including three matches in the GLVC Championship Tournament and the NCAA Midwest Regional. That trend continued on Tuesday as the 12th ranked team in the country took the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and then No. 1 doubles for the 1-0 lead.

UIndy then took matches at No. 6 singles, No. 2 singles, and sealed the match with a win at No. 4 singles, to earn the victory, 4-0.

Jess Purdy was trailing, 4-6 and 1-2, at No. 1 singles when the match was finished while Valentina Ivankovic was trailing,3-6 and 2-3, at No. 3 singles when the match was called. Marley Trifunovic was also still competing when the match was called, trailing, 4-6 and 0-3, when the fourth point was won.

With the win, the Greyhounds move onto the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon.
