NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team began its 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference campaign with a sweep of USciences on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-21, 31-29, and 25-18.

Nothing was easy for the Wildcats (5-4, 1-0 CACC) on Wednesday night as the Devils (1-5, 0-1 CACC) continued to fight back in each set.

The Wildcats jumped out to a large lead in the first set, as senior Kaitlin DiGiacinto served for 13 consecutive points, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 15-3 lead in the matter of minutes. With the Wildcats lead 21-10, the Devils went on a run of their own, scoring eight straight and 9-of-10 to close to within 22-19.

The Wildcats responded with back-to-back kills from DiGiacinto and senior Alex Siolos before sophomore Eile Harris put the final touches on the first set, 25-21.

It was the Devils' turn to jump out to a large lead in the second set, scoring four straight to take an 18-10 lead. The Wildcats retaliated with six of the next eight before rattling off three consecutive to pull to within 21-19.

Now down 22-19, the Wildcats scored four straight to take their first lead of the set on the strength of back-to-back kills by Siolos. An attack error gave the Wildcats its first set point at 25-24, but the Devils battled back to score two straight and have their own set point at 26-25. Then it was the Wildcats turn to score consecutive points to take the lead 27-26 before the teams went on the seesaw.

Going back-and-forth for the next five points, the Wildcats finally put the Devils away with a kill from Allison Briley and a solo block from Erin Bistany, 31-29.

The Wildcats broke away in the third set with five straight points, turning a 9-8 deficit into a 13-9 lead. Another three straight put the Wildcats ahead 17-12 before the Wildcats scored five of the last six points of the match, getting the final kill from DiGiacinto, 25-18.

Siolos led the Wildcats with another double-double, putting down a team high 10 kills while adding 10 digs. Freshman setter Miranda Shaw finished with seven kills on nine attempts while also dishing out 25 assists. Harris tallied two solo and seven block assists on the night, adding six kills to collect 11.5 points.

Briley led the defense with 19 digs while Shelby Henderson added 18. DiGiacinto contributed 11 digs while Siolos finished with 10. Siolos now has 999 career digs and is looking to become the eighth Wildcat to ever reach 1,000 career digs in the program's NCAA era.

The Wildcats hit .117 as a team but out-blocked the Devils, 12-5, to hold the visitors to a .007 attack percentage for the match.
