Wilmington Volleyball Takes First State Battle, 3-0, on the Road at Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team used 11 different student-athletes to record a point as the Wildcats took down Goldey-Beacom, 3-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest on Thursday night at the Joseph West Jones Center.

Set scores for the match were 25-14, 25-17, and 25-12.

The Wildcats (15-6, 8-2 CACC) did not have a single player reach double digits in kills, but recorded eighth different student-athletes with at least one termination. The Wildcats hit .271 for the match with 31 kills and was aided by 19 attack errors and seven ball-handling errors by the Lightning (5-13, 1-9 CACC).

The visitors opened the match with 14 kills on 28 attempts in the first set; committing just three errors to hit a match best .393. The Wildcats used a kill from Erin Bistany to spark a 6-0 run, getting a pair of aces from Miranda Shaw, to open a 15-4 lead. Another 3-0 run doubled up the Lightning, 20-10, before Allison Briley put the Lightning away with a kill, 25-14.

Hannah Karas started a 5-0 run for the Wildcats with a kill, as they turned a 12-9 lead into a 17-9 lead in the second set. Briley served up an ace for the 22-15 lead before kills from Brianna Cunha and Alex Siolos gave the Wildcats set point.

The service game of Shelby Henderson allowed the Wildcats to turn a 5-4 lead early in the third set into a 13-4 lead. Eile Harris and Briley picked up back-to-back solo blocks before Briley and Megan Ward capped the run with a double-block. The Lightning crawled back to within 21-12, but a double-block by Harris and Angela Collins started a 4-0 run for the Wildcats, as they closed out the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0, with a kill from Brianna Cunha.

Siolos led the Wildcats with eight kills, hitting .333 for the match, while adding six digs, five assists, and two aces. Briley added seven kills while hitting .375, also contributing eight digs. Kaitlin DiGiacinto put five attempts on the floor as well.

Henderson led the Wildcats with 13 digs while Shaw spread the offense around with 20 assists. Shaw also added two aces on the night.

Thursday started a four-match road trip for the Wildcats, as they head to Concordia for another CACC contest on Saturday. The first serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
