Top 10 Finishes by Freshmen Lead Cross Country at Don Cathcart Invitational

SALISBURY, Md. - - A pair of freshmen led the Wilmington University cross country teams at the 33rd Annual Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday afternoon hosted by Salisbury University at Winter Place Park.

Matt Gonzalez finished seventh out of 104 runners on the men's side while Yailynn Ramirez finished eighth out of 94 runners on the women's side. Gonzalez helped lead the Wildcats to a 3rd place finish with 107 total points.

Logan Strouse and Dan Wyshinski finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th place for 15 and 16 points, respectively, while Michael Dowd placed 25th overall for 22 points. Hayward Boutte Jr. rounded out the Wildcats scoring by crossing the line in 63rd overall for 47 points.

Gonzalez rank the 8K course in 26:46.30 for his seventh place finished while Strouse crossed the line in 27:34.40. Wyshinski was right behind Strouse by 10 seconds, finishing in 27:44.10 for 17th place. Dowd wasn't too far behind in 25th place, crossing the line in 28:31.70. Boutte finished in 31:41.50.

Rounding out the Wildcats on the course was Darnell McLean in 67th place, finishing the 8K course in 32:17.20.

Hagerstown CC won the meet with 28 points while host Salisbury finished second with 42 points. Hagerstown teammates Henry Schmidt and Zane Chalker crossed the line in first in a tie, finishing with the same exact time of 25:16.10.

On the women's side, Ramirez finishing eighth overall with a time of 23:37.20. The district of Columbia freshman Kamille Dixon won the meet with a time of 22:52.70. Host Salisbury won the team meet with 32 points followed by Stevenson placing second after the tiebreaker with Mansfield with 63 points.

The next two races for the Wildcats will be on Belmont Plateau, first for their final regular season meet hosted by Jefferson on Saturday, October 9. The Jack St. Clair Memorial will begin at 12:15.
