Amiri Stewart Named CACC Defensive Player of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Following a pair of outstanding efforts on the defensive side of the ball last week, Wilmington University men's basketball's Amiri Stewart was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

The Wildcats went 2-0 last weekend extending their winning streak to four games overall. The Wildcats defeated Chestnut Hill, 69-67, and Bloomfield, 74-72, to move to 13-9 overall and 6-6 in CACC play.

In the last second win against Chestnut Hill, Amiri Stewart scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Five of his seven rebounds were on the defensive end of the court while he also added a season high four blocked shots and two steals.

Stewart sparked the 11-point comeback in the final six minutes against Bloomfield, energizing the team with a steal and a layup. Stewart had another steal and fed Justin Thomas for a layup to bring the Wildcats to within 68-63 with four minutes to play. His third steal in the final six minutes led to hitting one free throw and extending the Wildcats lead to 71-68 with 1:17 to play. He finished with 10 points, eight rebounds (six defensive), six assists, and a season high five steals for the Wildcats.

It is the first time in his career that he has been named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Randy Rickards was named to the Weekly Honor Roll for averaging 16 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game for the Wildcats as well.
