NEWARK, Del. - - The 14th-ranked Wilmington University women's soccer team put on a good show for the Wilmington faithful on Homecoming Saturday, defeating the Purple Knights of Bridgeport, 2-0, at the WU Athletics Complex.
With the win, the Wildcats improve their record to 5-1-2 and remain unbeaten in conference play to the tune of a 2-0-1 record. The Purple Knights drop to 2-3-2 and 2-2-0 in CACC play with the loss.
Wilmington got the scoring started in the 14th minute when Eboni Bradshaw notched her fifth goal of the season on a header that tipped the keeper's fingers. Fellow freshman Indigo Kirk set her up, taking a pass from Evelyn Payne and chipping it across the box to where Bradshaw was waiting. Things were quiet the rest of the first half, outside of a few shots by both teams that couldn't produce any results.
The Wildcats were able to strike again in the second half to cushion their lead, thanks to Sierra Bartley and two teammates in the 61st minute. Eboni Bradshaw took the ball about 40 yards out from the goal and found an open Evelyn Payne racing along the right side of the box. She laid a cross into the middle just in front of the keeper, allowing Bartley to race in past her defender and poke the ball into the corner of the net for her second goal of the year. Wilmington played strong defense the rest of the way, yielding only two more Bridgeport shots before the clock ran out.
Arianna Myers collected her second solo shutout of the year, saving the only two shots on goal she faced.
Wilmington led in shots 17-8 (4 SOG for WU, 2 SOG for UB) as well as corners, 5-3.
The Wildcats hit the road for their next contest, as they will travel up to Philadelphia on Tuesday to face #12 Jefferson in a conference clash that will likely also have regional and national ranking implications. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
