Women’s Tennis Wins Eighth Straight CACC Contest in 6-1 Win Over Post

WILMINGTON, Del. - - After shaking the rust off in their season opener on Tuesday, the Wilmington University women's tennis team looked to return to form on Saturday, defeating Post, 6-1, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (2-0, 2-0 CACC) won the doubles point before going on to win five of the six singles matches. All of the singles' wins were in straight sets.

The newcomer combination of Alva Norberg and Carmelle Vial started the doubles match with a 6-1 win at No. 3. Jess Purdy and Neus Ramos Moreno gave the Wildcats the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. The Eagles (4-1, 0-1 CACC) managed to win at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (7-3), but the point was already awarded to the Wildcats.

Neus Ramos Moreno gave the Wildcats their first singles point with a win at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-1. Carmelle Vial won at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-2, before Jess Purdy gave the Wildcats the team victory with a sweep at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-1. Valentina Ivankovic kept the ball rolling for the Wildcats with a win at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-2.

Post was able to get on the board with a win at No. 5 singles, even after Alva Norberg won the first set, 6-1. Post's Nina Langenfeld battled back to win the second set, 6-4, and then took the third set super set, 11-9.

Fenna Swaan capped the afternoon with her first singles win of the season, winning at No. 6, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2.

Dual matches will be put on hold this week, as the Wildcats, and much of the East Region, will be competing at the 2022 ITA East Region Championships next weekend. The individual and doubles tournament begins on Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
