Women’s Tennis Opens 2023 Spring Season with 8-1 Win at Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. - - The No. 23 ranked Wilmington University women's tennis team started its spring season with an 8-1 win over NCAA Division III Haverford to remain unbeaten on Wednesday inside the Alumni Fieldhouse.

The Wildcats are now 13-0 overall on the season and have nine more matches scheduled prior to the NCAA postseason begins in May. The Wildcats moved up to No. 23 in NCAA Division II in today's ITA National Rankings.

Wednesday started with the Wildcats winning all three doubles matches. Fenna Swaan and Carmelle Vial first won at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, followed by Marley Trifunovic and Maelle Fontanges at No. 3 doubles, 8-3. Alva Norberg and Larize Nel finished off the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

Marley Trifunovic started off the singles with a win at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-3, before newcomer Maelle Fontanges won her first singles match of her collegiate career, 6-2 and 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Neus Ramos Moreno kept the winning going with a 6-4 and 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, giving the Wildcats a 6-1 lead.

The Fords got on the board with a three-set win at No. 2 singles, but then the Wildcats closed out the victory at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Larize Nel closed out her match at No. 5 with a 6-2 and 6-0 win before Alva Norberg wrapped up the competition with a 6-3 and 6-1 victory at No. 6.

The Wildcats take to the road in Pennsylvania again for their next contest as well, heading to Millersville on Tuesday afternoon.
