An All-Around Team Effort Helps Volleyball Beat Goldey-Beacom, 3-1

NEWARK, Del. – It was an all-around team effort as the Wilmington University women's volleyball team stayed alive to win the match over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom, 3-1, Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-17.

In the first set, the Wildcats were off to a 3-0 start then went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 10-3. WilmU was able to continue to rack up points as they won the first set, 25-18, thanks to back-to-back service aces by Jill Braunsberg.

The Wildcats started out slow in the second set as Goldey-Beacom went on a 9-0 run that included five service aces. Mandy Behiels was able to get a kill and start a run for Wilmington to make it an 11-7 game in favor of Goldey, before the Lightning had three kills in a row to increase their lead, 15-7.  The Wildcats did not quit though, as they kept chipping away to make it an 18-12 game, before they were able to go on a 7-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. GBC was two points away from set point, but the Wildcats were able to come from behind with three kills and a service ace to score five points and take the set, 25-23.

Wilmington found themselves behind again in the third set before they could tie the game up at 19 apiece, but the Lightning held on to take the set, 25-21.

In the fourth set, WilmU was able to take the lead early and not look back as they had 15 kills in the 25-17 win. A 5-1 spurt helped separate the Wildcats in the set, as a block from Angel Oliver helped the Wildcats take a 16-10 lead.

Mandy Behiels led the Wildcats with 16 kills and 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Jill Braunsberg was one assist away from a triple-double, as she had 11 kills, 10 digs, and nine assists. Bailey Andrews also secured a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Miranda Shaw dished out 33 assists and had five kills, while Jenna Brown posted 16 digs. Rebecca Rawlinson had three block solos at the net.

Once again, the Wildcats out-hit their opponent 52-44, with a .242 hitting percentage to Goldey's .147. They also out-blocked the Lightning 11-6.  

Up next, the Wildcats travel to New York as they take on Dominican on Friday, September 28 for a 5:00 p.m. start time. WilmU will then come back home Saturday for Homecoming and take on Nyack for an 11:00 a.m. start.
