Volleyball Splits Opening Day of Daemen Volleyball Classic, Defeating Glenville State, 3-1

AMHERST, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team split the opening day of the Daemen Volleyball Classic on Friday, defeating Glenville State, 3-1, in the opening match before falling to host Daemen, 3-0, in the nightcap inside Lumsden Gymnasium.

Set scores against Glenville State were 25-15, 17-25, 25-21, and 25-17.

Set score against Daemen were 25-12, 25-14, and 25-28.

Match vs. Glenville State:

With the match tied, 1-1, the Wildcats captured the final two games to start the Daemen Classic off on the right foot with a 3-1 victory. The Wildcats had their best offensive production in the third game, putting down 15 kills to go with a .205 attack percentage to regain the lead.

Bailey Andrews gave the Wildcats a 5-1 lead in the third set, but following a timeout, Glenville State went on a 5-1 run of their own to take a 7-6 lead. Dorie Moore collected an ace and Mandy Behiels put down a kill for three straight points, and another 3-0 run gave the Wildcats a 12-8 lead.

The Wildcats remained in control at 16-12 but the Pioneers again fought back to tie the game, 18-18, but a 4-1 spurt had the Wildcats in control again. Now at 22-20, Mandy Behiels put down a kill and a Pioneer error gave the Wildcats set point. Rebecca Rawlinson finished off the set with a kill, 25-20.

The fourth set was back-and-forth until the Wildcats went on a run with the set tied, 11-11. Caroline Wise sparked a 5-1 run, getting the first kill and adding another during the spurt, eventually putting the Wildcats ahead, 16-12. The Pioneers could only get to within 20-17 the rest of the way, as Bailey Andrews put down a kill and Sarah Couch collected an ace to put the match away.

Mandy Behiels led the way with 14 kills while Bailey Andrews and Rebecca Rawlinson added 10 kills each. Rawlinson hit .286 for the match, adding one solo and four block assists. Sarah Couch dished out 40 assists and led the team with four aces while Elly Collins led the back row with 21 digs.

Match vs. Daemen:

The Wildcats were unable to get anything going offensively against Daemen, putting down 22 kills while committing 22 errors on 99 swings in the match. Daemen collected four blocks in the match while also picking up 53 digs to keep the Wildcats at bay.

Senior Rebecca Rawlinson led the Wildcats with six kills, hitting .267 with only two miscues on 15 swings. Angel Oliver, Emma Kongevold, Bailey Andrews, and Mandy Behiels all finished with three kills each. Kongevold put down her three kills on seven attempts without any errors for a .429 attack percentage.

Sarah Couch dished out 16 assists in the loss while Elly Collins was the only Wildcat with double digit digs, finishing with 17 overall. Oliver denied two attack attempts on her own while Rebecca Rawlinson led the way with three block assists.
