PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Top Seeded Men’s Soccer Starts CACC Tournament With Home Game Against No. 8 Chestnut Hill

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team wrapped up the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season Title in the final game of the regular season last week, and now prepares for the CACC Tournament starting with a First Round game on Tuesday against eighth seeded Chestnut Hill College at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats won the Regular Season Title by knocking off then CACC leading Georgian Court, 2-0 on October 17. They then went on to defeat Dominican, 2-1, in double overtime, and finished off the regular season with a 5-0 victory at Goldey-Beacom to capture the CACC Regular Season Title for the first time since 2015 and just third time overall.

The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 12-1-4 overall record, going 9-1-2 in the CACC. Chestnut Hill slid down to eighth on the final day of the regular season as Concordia defeated Goldey-Beacom to move to fifth overall. The Griffins finished the regular season 7-11 overall, going 6-6 in the CACC.

Scouting the No. 1 Wilmington University Wildcats:

The Wildcats are second in the CACC in scoring average per game, putting in 2.88 goals a game. That number balloons to 3.25 in 12 CACC contest, also ranking second in the league. Where the Wildcats stand out is defensively, where they lead the league in only allowing 15 goals all season, good enough for a 0.83 goals against average overall. It gets even better in their 12 CACC games, allowing only eight goals for a 0.63 GAA, both of which leads the CACC.

Individually, the Wildcats are led by Will Stone's 35 points on the year, scoring 11 goals while adding 13 assists. He ranks second in the league in assists and points, while placing fourth in the league in goals. Tom Garratt isn't far behind Stone, finishing the regular season with 31 points, scoring 10 goals and adding 11 assists. His 11 assists are third in the CACC while his 31 points are tied for third.

The Wildcats also have Fredrik Bentdal with 24 points (8G, 8A), and Sam Jester with 15 points (6G, 3A) to help support the offense. Twelve different Wildcats have goals at least one goal this season.

Defensively, Vinny Tasca leads the CACC with a 0.84 GAA in goal for the Wildcats and ranks second overall with a .754 save percentage. He has 46 saves and six shutouts, five of which came in CACC games, on the season.

Scouting the No. 8 Chestnut Hill College Griffins:

The Griffins come into Tuesday going 1-3 in their last four games of the regular season, but 4-2 in the last six CACC contests. Their regular season ended with a 6-1 loss to Mercy and a 5-0 loss to NYIT on Thursday.

As a team, the Griffins are eighth in the CACC in scoring 1.50 goals per game. That number rises slightly to 1.67 goals per game in CACC played, tied for eighth in the league. Defensively, they are 10th in the league in allowing 2.86 goals per game overall, and 10th overall in CACC play with a 2.05 GAA.

Individually, the Griffins are led by Jason Doherty's 15 points on the season. He has scored seven goals to go with one assist. Pedro Dutra has 14 points on the year, scoring six goals while adding two assists. Miguel Marra is the final Griffin in double digits with 11 points, scoring five goals and adding one assist.

In goal, Sergio Hernandez has started 12 games for the Griffins, going 4-7 in goal with one shutout. He has made 63 saves and carries a 3.43 GAA into the postseason. Frank Maniscalco has appeared in eight games while making six starts. He is 3-4 on the year with a 1.84 GAA while making 34 saves.
