Wildcats Hang Tough With North Leaders, but Fall at Post, 89-69

WATERBURY, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women's basketball team hung tough with the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division leaders before Post started to pull away late in the third quarter on its way to an 89-69 victory on Saturday inside the Drubner Center.

Amber Washington scored a career high 30 points while the Wildcats (1-21, 0-11 CACC) set a new season high with 11 made three-pointers and scored the second most points in a game this season. The Wildcats shot a season's best 41.3 percent from the field in the loss.

The Wildcats won the second quarter, 25-24, and had the game to within a single point with 5:54 to play in the third quarter, but the Eagles (13-7, 8-2 CACC) answered with a 13-0 run, beginning to take the game over.

The Wildcats were down as many as 12 in the first quarter, but the Wildcats finished the frame on an 8-3 run, capped by an Amber Washington three-point play to end the quarter, 22-15.

The Eagles pushed the lead back out to 10 early in the second but then the Wildcats rattled off a 14-2 run to take the lead. The Wildcats went 5-for-5 during the stretch, getting three-pointers from Washington, Trinity Brittingham, and back-to-back from Aniyah Bond to take the lead, 31-29, with 6:17 to play in the quarter. Post had an answer again, going on a 9-2 run but then a Bond jumper and a Washington three-pointer saw the game tied once again, 38-38, with 2:33 to play in the half. After Mia Fuller got the Wildcats to within one, 41-30, the Eagles scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 46-40 lead into the break.

Down nine, 52-43, early in the third quarter, the Wildcats got three-pointers from Amber Washington and Trinity Brittingham, and then capped an 8-0 run with a layup from Aniyah Bond to cut the deficit to a single point, 52-51, with 5:54 to play in the third. But once again, the Eagles had an answer, this time going on a 13-0 run to take a 65-51 lead with 2:34 to play in the quarter. The run ultimately concluded at 16-4 to end the quarter, as the Eagles led, 68-55, going into the fourth.

Trinity Brittingham started the fourth with a layup, but the Eagles hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a 17-point lead. They were able to put it on cruise control the rest of the way, resulting in the 89-69 victory.

Amber Washington shot 11-of-15 form the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point land, for 30 points, adding seven rebounds and two assists. Aniyah Bond and Trinity Brittingham scored 14 points each while Bond had a team high eight rebounds. Azayah Garrison led with five assists.

The Wildcats return home for four straight contests at the WU Athletics Complex. They start the home stand on Wednesday, February 14, against nationally ranked #6 Jefferson. The opening tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
