Women’s Soccer Drops 2014 Home Opener, 6-0, to Adelphi

NEWARK, Del. - - Junior reserve Olivia Czavar led Adelphi past the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 6-0, contributing a second half hat-trick on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (0-2 overall) dropped their home opener, falling behind 2-0 at the half before Adelphi (2-0) put four on the board in the second half to carry them to a nonconference victory.

The Panthers struck early in the contest, scoring their first two goals just 1:49 apart with the first goal coming at the 5:01 mark of the contest. Adelphi's Victoria Antonino got the scoring started with her second goal of the year, beating Wildcat goalkeeper Julia Brown with a long-range shot.

Laura Gomez tallied the second goal to make it 2-0 just a 1:49 later, putting in a cross from the right side by Meaghan Simmonds. The Wildcats were able to keep the deficit at 2-0 heading into the halftime break, but was outshot 11-0 in the first 45 minutes.

Another quick-hitter by the Panthers to start the second half hurt any momentum the Wildcats were attempting to acquire, as Czavar scored her first of the season off an assist from Kelsey Simpson just 2:04 into the half.

Czavar tacked on her second goal of the game in the 64th minute before Erin Carey made it 5-0 in favor of the visitors in the 65th minute off a corner kick by Melissa Duarte. Czavar capped the scoring and the hat trick in the 88th minute, putting in a cross from Sarah Rose Barone Stern.

The Panthers received 10 votes in Tuesday's first NSCAA Division II National Poll.

Brown recorded five saves in goal for the Wildcats through the first half while freshman Kierstyn Williams made her Wildcat debut with four saves in the second half. Panther netminder Sam Whitney recorded the win without having to make a save before giving way to Kelly Hiersche for the final 20 minutes. Hiersche made one save for the Panthers.

Shelby Schneeweis recorded a pair of shots for the Wildcats, getting one on frame while freshman La'Dae Boykin picked up the other shot for the home team.

The Wildcats start their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference campaign on Saturday when they head to Felician for a night game. The game will be held at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex with the opening kick at 7 p.m.
