Seven Wildcats Earn National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-East Region

NEWARK, Del. - - Seven Wilmington University baseball players earned regional honors a day ahead of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament as four Wildcats earned First Team National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-East Region honors and three more were named Second Team.

The Wildcats (33-12) enter the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament hosted by Franklin Pierce as the No. 4 seed and square off against No. 3 seed Southern New Hampshire on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Wilmington seniors Josh Swirchak (2B), Sam Goines (OF), Frank Samluk (Utility), and Tyler Fries (RP) all earned First Team NCBWA All-East Region honors while seniors Matt Lopes (C) and Jamie Treml (SP), and sophomore Christian Adorno (SS) were voted as Second Team NCBWA All-East Region on Tuesday.

Goines (Wilmington, Del.), recently named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and the CACC Tournament MVP, leads the Wildcats and is 17th in all of NCAA Division II with a .432 average. He also leads the CACC with 67 hits, 53 runs, 94 total bases, and a .532 on-base percentage. He is third in the CACC with 40 RBI and fourth overall with a .606 slugging percentage.

Swirckak (Manassas, Va.) is second on the team and 93rd in all of NCAA Division II with a .392 batting average, collecting 58 hits, 10 doubles, four triples, and two home runs. He is fourth in the CACC with 38 RBI and third in the CACC with 48 runs scored. Swirchak’s .483 on-base percentage is third in the CACC while his .554 slugging percentage ranks fifth in the CACC.

Samluk (Middletown, Del.), a 2014 Second Team NCBWA All-East Region performer, is tied for fourth on the team with a .351 batting average, leading the CACC with 14 doubles on the year. HE is third in the CACC with 87 total bases, adding two triples and three home runs for a total of 60 hits on the year. On the mound, the senior is 6-0 with a 2.28 ERA in 55.1 innings pitched. Samluk is third in the CACC among starters in averaging 9.60 strikeouts per nine innings, collecting 59 on the year.

Fries (Kennett Square, Pa.), a 2014 Second Team NCBWA All-East Region performer, became the program’s all-time leader in saves, earning his 18th save against Dominican to open the CACC Tournament. He leads the CACC and is 14th in all of NCAA Division II with 10 saves this season. In 24 appearances he is carrying a 0.88 ERA with a 3-1 record, pitching 30.2 innings this season. He is averaging 10.27 strikeouts per nine innings, striking out 35 batters this year.

Lopes (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) earns Second Team NCBWA All-East Region for the third year in a row, leading the CACC with 44 RBI on the year. He is tied for fourth on the team with a .351 batting average, slugging .497 while getting on-base at a .390 clip. He has 53 hits with 10 doubles and four home runs, and has thrown out 11 would-be base stealers from behind the plate.

Adorno (Millville, N.J.) earns his first All-Region honors after finishing third on the team with a .365 batting average, collecting 54 hits with six doubles and a triple. The sophomore has 26 RBI and has scored 31 more runs. Adorno has stolen 16 bases this season and gets on-base at a .435 clip. The shortstop has 104 assists with only seven errors on the year, totaling a .959 fielding percentage.

Treml (Newark, Del.), a 2014 Second Team NCBWA All-East Region honoree, leads the CACC and is 10th in all of NCAA Division II with a 1.14 earned run average, going 7-0 in 10 appearances. Batters are hitting just .143 against the senior, giving up 26 hits in 55.1 innings, ranking second in NCAA Division II by only allowing 4.23 hits per nine innings. He strikes out 9.27 batters per nine innings, totaling 57 on the year, and is ninth in NCAA Division II with a 0.89 WHIP.
