Goines, Fries, and Adorno Named 2015 NCBWA All-American for Wilmington Baseball

NEWARK, Del. - - Three members of the Wilmington University baseball team were named a 2015 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Americans, as seniors Sam Goines and Tyler Fries earned Third Team and sophomore Christian Adorno was named Honorable Mention.

It is the first time all three Wildcats (37-13) have earned All-American honors in their careers. The announcement was made Thursday, the day the team left Wilmington University for Cary, N.C., in advance of the team’s first trip to the NCAA Division II Baseball National Finals.

Goines (Wilmington, Del.) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and is the team’s leading hitter. Following the East Regional, Goines is hitting .415 with 71 hits, including 12 doubles, a team high six triples, two home runs, 43 RBI, a team high 57 runs scored, and a team high 23 stolen bases. He also leads the team with a .522 on-base percentage and a .591 slugging percentage.

Fries (Kennett Square, Pa.) was named the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament Most Outstanding Player, picking up a save in each of the four wins last weekend. He now leads all of NCAA Division II with 14 saves on the year, making 28 appearances and pitching 37.0 innings. He is currently 3-1 on the year and carries a 1.22 earned run average into the NCAA Division II Baseball National Finals. Fries has struck out 42 batters, averaging a team high 10.22 strikeouts per nine innings.

Adorno (Millville, N.J.) was named Second Team NCBWA All-East Region but earned his way as an Honorable Mention All-American as a shortstop. He is the team’s third leading hitter, batting .354 as a sophomore, collecting 60 hits with six doubles, one triple, 30 RBI, and 36 runs scored. He is also third on the team with a .433 on-base percentage and carries a .412 slugging percentage following the East Regional Tournament.

Catawba’s catcher Will Albertson was named the 2015 NCBWA Player of the Year after hitting .473 with 26 home runs and 90 RBI while UC San Diego’s Justin Donatella was named the 2015 NCBWA Pitcher of the Year. St. Cloud State’s head coach Pat Dolan was named the 2015 NCBWA Coach of the Year.
