Fries, Samluk, and Goines Named 2015 Daktronics NCAA Division II Baseball All-American for Wilmington Baseball

NEWARK, Del. - - A trio of Wilmington University baseball student-athletes earned the highest honor for their play on the field as Tyler Fries, Frank Samluk, and Sam Goies were named to the 2015 Daktronics NCAA Division II Baseball All-America Teams.

In a vote of the nation’s sports information directors Fries (Kennett Square, Pa.) and Samluk (Middletown, Del.) earned First Team All-American status while Goines (Wilmington, Del.) earned Third Team All-American honors.

It is Fries’ second All-American award of the 2015 season as he was also named a Third Team NCBWA All-American. Fries leads all of NCAA Division II with 14 saves, earning four in the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament while being named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. The senior also appeared in both games in the NCAA Division II Baseball Finals while not allowing a run in two innings.

This season, Fries appeared in 30 games, going 3-1 with 14 saves. In 39.0 innings pitched, he struck out 44 batters while only walking 11, giving up six runs (five earned) for a 1.15 earned run average. He is the program’s all-time leader in career appearances (104), career saves (22), season saves (14), and career ERA (1.75).

Samluk is a repeat Daktronics All-American as a utility player, moving up from being named a 2014 Second Team All-American player. The multifaceted senior was fifth on the team with a .327 batting average, collecting 65 hits mainly from the leadoff position. He hit a team high 15 doubles while adding two triples, three home runs, 34 RBI, and scored a team’s second best 54 runs.

While mostly playing first base, Samluk was the team’s second most productive starting pitcher as well. He started a team high 12 games while going 6-1 on the year. He had the third best ERA on the team, giving up 27 runs (16 earned) in 66.1 innings pitched for a 2.17 ERA. He struck out 71 batters while only walking 20.

Samluk has started 155 career games and has the fourth most hits in his career (186) in program history. He is also third in runs scored (124) and stolen bases (41). On the mound he went 17-3 in his career, collecting the sixth lowest career ERA all-time (2.30). In 199.2 career innings, Samluk is third with 187 strikeouts while only walking 61 batters.

It is Goines’ second All-American award of the 2015 season as he was also named a Third team NCBWA All-American. Goines set a Wilmington season record by becoming the only player to ever hit over .400 for t a season, completing the year with a .404 batting average. He led the team with 72 hits, six triples, 58 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases. He was second on the team with 44 RBI while also hitting 12 doubles and three RBI.

With three seasons as a Wildcat, Goines has collected the second best career batting average, hitting .357 with 167 career hits. He is also second all-time with a .459 on-base percentage and sixth all-time with a .502 slugging percentage. His 12 career triples is third all-time, as is his 112 career RBI. He went 50-for-62 on the base paths, surpassing Jordan Oncay’s career 44 stolen bases to lead the all-time record book.

The Wildcats (37-15) faced the 2015 Ron Lenz Player of the Year award winner in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division II Baseball Finals in Catawba’s catcher Will Albertson. St. Cloud State’s Reese Gregory was named the 2015 Ron Lenz Pitcher of the Year.
