Fries, Goines, and Treml Gain 2015 ABCA/Rawlings All-American Status for Wilmington Baseball

NEWARK, Del. - - In a vote of NCAA Division II baseball coaches, three Wilmington University baseball student-athletes were named a 2015 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-American earlier this week.

Wilmington standouts Tyler Fries (Kennett Square, Pa.), Sam Goines (Wilmington, Del.), and Jamie Treml (Newark, Del.) were named among the three All-American teams. Fries was named a Second Team All-American while Goines and Treml were voted to the Third Team All-American.

It is Fries’ third All-American award of the 2015 season as he was also named a First Team Daktronics and Third Team NCBWA All-American. Fries leads all of NCAA Division II with 14 saves, earning four in the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament while being named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. The senior also appeared in both games in the NCAA Division II Baseball Finals while not allowing a run in two innings.

This season, Fries appeared in 30 games, going 3-1 with 14 saves. In 39.0 innings pitched, he struck out 44 batters while only walking 11, giving up six runs (five earned) for a 1.15 earned run average. It is Goines’ third All-American award of the 2015 season as he was also named a Third Team Daktronics and NCBWA All-American. Goines set a Wilmington season record by becoming the only player to ever hit over .400 for t a season, completing the year with a .404 batting average. He led the team with 72 hits, six triples, 58 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases. He was second on the team with 44 RBI while also hitting 12 doubles and three RBI.

With three seasons as a Wildcat, Goines has collected the second best career batting average, hitting .357 with 167 career hits. He is also second all-time with a .459 on-base percentage and sixth all-time with a .502 slugging percentage. His 12 career triples is third all-time, as is his 112 career RBI. He went 50-for-62 on the base paths, surpassing Jordan Oncay’s career 44 stolen bases to lead the all-time record book.

It is the second straight year Treml has been named an All-American, as he earned Third Team Daktronics All-American honors in 2014. The fifth-year senior again led the pitching staff in 2015, amassing an 8-1 overall record in 12 games (11 starts). He compiled the lowest ERA for starters on the team and the CACC, only allowing 1.54 earned runs per nine innings. His 70.1 innings pitched were most on the team in 2015, as were his 74 strikeouts. Treml struck out a season high 12 Penmen in a 3-2 victory over Southern New Hampshire to start the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.

Treml is among the top ten in almost every pitching category in the program’s career record book. He became the program’s all-time leader in wins (31) and strikeouts (330) during the 2015 season, and is also the all-time leader in innings pitched (286.1), most combined shutouts (11), and lowest opponent’s batting average (.178).
