WILMINGTON, Del. - - The accolades continue to pile on for the Wilmington University baseball program following the remarkable 2015 season.

This accolade, however, has more to do with the success of the leader throughout his illustrious career in the state of the Delaware let alone the success from this past season alone.

Eleventh year head coach Brian August had his baseball career brought to the forefront on Monday night as he was inducted into the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame prior to the Wilmington Blue Rocks game at Frawley Stadium.

Beginning with his First Team All-State seasons as the St. Mark’s High School shortstop in 1993 and 1994, August had his baseball career laid out in front of him by Blue Rocks’ Director of Community Affairs and Public Address Announcer Kevin Linton.

August was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 44th round of the 1994 MLB Amateur Draft out of St. Mark’s High School but decided to forgo the draft and head to his hometown college and the University of Delaware to play for head coach Bob Hannah.

In only three seasons as a Blue Hen, August set a career record for doubles, was the 1997 America East Player of the Year, and was an ABCA and NCBWA Second Team All-American. He was once again drafted in the MLB Draft, leaving UD after his junior year when being drafted in the 18th round by the New York Yankees.

In three years in the Yankees organization reaching as high as the Advanced Class A level, August hut .271 with 50 doubles, five triples, 16 home runs, and 128 RBI. After hitting .318 with 22 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, and 67 RBI for the Oneonta Yankees, August was named the New York Penn League MVP for the 1998 season.

His coaching career started at Cecil County Community College and he led the 2004 squad to a 41-12 overall record, including reaching the Regional Championship. The Seahawks ended the year ranked fifth in the NJCAA Division II national ranking.

August came over to Wilmington beginning with the 2005 spring season and currently holds a 351-209-2 overall record following the 2015 season. His squads have captured six Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships, been to seven NCAA Division II East Regional Tournaments, and advanced to the 2015 NCAA Division II National Finals for the first time in program history. He won his 300th career game during the 2014 season and currently carries a .626 overall win percentage.

August was inducted into the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame with legendary St. Mark’s High School coach Tom Lemon by his side. Joining August in the celebration and also being inducted into the Hall of Fame were former MLB power hitter and August’s teammate at St. Mark’s and Delaware Kevin Mench, Tom Pegelow, Jim Hudson, Bill Morrow, and Steve Gold.

August and Mench are the first players inducted in the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame from St. Mark’s, which has won 13 of the 31 state baseball titles since 1985.
